Suspended Students Support Initiative
Introduction
The purpose of this program is to assist students and modify their attitude and behaviour in a positive manner through a work placement. This program assists students who are:
- under suspension;
- disengaged;
- not attending school; or
- at risk of suspension or exclusion.
SSSI Services Provided
The following process and service/s are provided:
- School Principals recommend to the student’s parents/guardian that MRSILS may be of assistance and that contact with MRSILS should be made.
- MRSILS staff then interview the student and parents/guardian for the purpose of defining the problem and devising a solution to the problem.
- If appropriate, an industry work experience placement will be arranged by MRSILS after mutual agreement on what the appropriate industry placement (IP) should be.
- Contact with the parents during the period of placement is maintained by MRSILS to keep them informed and identify any issues that may arise.
- A MRSILS Officer maintains contact with the student’s school Principal to update the Principal on the situation and to suggest further strategies for keeping the student engaged.
- After the completion of the IP or other appropriate activity a meeting is arranged with the student, parents/guardian and an MRSILS staff person to identify the positive and negative results of action to date, and to mutually agree on a personal plan for the student’s immediate future.
- A case file is raised and maintained on the student.
